In recent years, the wildly-anticipated Super Bowl halftime show has featured artists such as Beyoncé last year, Madonna in 2012, Prince in 2007 and Paul McCartney in 2005. All these mega-stars shared the halftime spotlight with other acts of similar stature. The half time show has become a parade of superstar performers, each one attempting to top the other . This year, the NFL is ready to take a different direction. Twenty eight year old Bruno Mars is the youngest, and first solo headliner to perform at half time. Although the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be a side act, Mars is said to be the lone star attraction for the event. Hot off of a Grammy win
on Sunday, he clearly commands a significant audience, and the organizers are hoping to capitalize on that face. They are set to follow-up on Beyoncé’s success with the younger crowds from last year. Mars has mass appeal and is very likable, which could possibly gap the generations between audience viewers.
Bruno Mars is not only a singer. He writes, composes, produces, and most importantly performs. He has become quite the entertainer being compared to a young Michael Jackson. Mars is charismatic with a bit of a “struggling artist” story. He did not go straight to the Grammy’s, nor was his name picked from a hat to headline the Super Bowl half time spectacular. He collaborated with and wrote songs for many famous singers prior to his own stardom. Mars has written songs for Cee Lo Green, Justin Bieber and B.O.B., just to name a few. At one point, Mars was selling his songs for two hundred and fifty dollars each.
After Sunday night’s Grammy awards, the choice of Bruno Mars for solo Super Bowl half time performer is looking better and better. At the 2014 Grammy awards, Mars walked away with his second Grammy. This year, he was awarded the 2014 best pop vocal album for “Unorthodox Jukebox.” Mars received his first Grammy in 2011 for best male pop vocal performance with “Just the Way You Are.” Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Peter Gene Hernandez, is now known as Bruno Mars.
With one of the biggest sporting events of the year almost here, it is certain Las Vegas is buzzing with gambling fever, trying to determine whether it will it be the Denver Broncos or Seattle Seahawks who emerge victorious. Super Bowl organizers have placed their bets on Bruno Mars and his brand new Grammy. Betting is always dangerous business, but if it pays off, the NFL may be ready to call the change of direction a success. If Bruno Mars can successfully capture the Super Bowl audience , this years event could refresh the enthusiasm once held for the halftime spectacular. A changing of the guard may be at hand.
