Cal State University System Facing $1.8 Billion Pileup In Needed Maintenance

CSULA

As if things weren’t already bad for the California State University system which is currently dealing with budget cuts and students protesting against tuition hikes, it is now facing another problem.

Officials say the 23-campus system is facing a $1.8 billion pileup in needed maintenance, repairs and upgrades on campuses across the state.

This is due to years of budget cutbacks. The CSU has not received any funding for maintenance since the 2007-2008 school year and officials are asking for $15 millions a year for the next three fiscal years, the Pasadena Star-News reports.

The newspaper also reports that nearly half of the buildings in the CSU are more than 40 years old.

Education officials are urging California governor Jerry Brown to address the problem.
