The legendary Apollo Theater in New York City now has plenty of ‘azucar!’.
That is because Cuban salsa singer Celia Cruz has been honored with a place on the theater’s famous Walk of Legends, making her the first Latin artist to have the honor.
Elia Knight, daughter of Cruz’s husband, Pedro Knight y Omer Pardillo, executive of her assets aceptaron el reconocimiento.
To celebrate the milestone, musicians Jose “El Canario” Alberto and Lucrecia performed some of Cruz’ most famous songs during the ceremony last Saturday. The concert was also part of a series celebrating the 80th anniversary of the theater.
The honor comes on the 50th anniversary of the late singer’s first appearance at the historic theater. La Reina De La Salsa first performed at the Apollo Theater on March 22, 1964 with fellow Cuban musician Machito y Joe Cuba, un artista Puertorriqueño.
Cruz died in 2003 after a battle with cancer.
