Hundreds of Angelinos including Mayor Eric Garcetti marched down the streets of Mission Hills and Pacoima on Sunday to honor civil rights leader César Chávez.
The celebration was a way to celebrate César Chávez Day, a state holiday observed every March 31 to honor the life and legacy of the man who fought for workers’ rights.
Mayor Garcetti along with Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers walked in unity from Brand Park in Mission Hills all the way to Ritchie Valens Park in Pacoima, where there was also a celebration with food and live entertainment.
“César fought for the basic needs of all the workers,” said Huerta during the event. “He taught us that we can make a change as long as we are together and we make a commitment to work together for one goal.”
She also encouraged those who attended and participated in the march to go see the César Chavez movie which opened in theaters last Friday.
“La historia de César es una historia que se debe de contar,” she said. “Es una historia que inspira a la gente de que sí pueden hacer un cambio, y que habla del poder de la gente”.
Among those who participated in the march were students, Aztec dancers and entire familias.
Garcetti said Chávez “changed things for all of America.”
