While graduation season may still be a couple months away, one very special guest has already confirmed his attendance to the commencement celebration at a local university.
President Barack Obama will not only be attending this year’s graduation ceremony at UC Irvine, but he will also be delivering the commencement address, the White House announced Thursday.
The Commander-in-Chief’s speech will come as the campus celebrates its 50th anniversary in which President Lyndon B. Johnson spoke at the dedication in 1964.
About 8,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students will be in attendance when the President delivers his speech.
So, how did the graduating students at UC Irvine get so lucky as to get President Obama to leave his duties at the White House and come to their school?
They simply asked.
Earlier this month, students made a video invitation and sent it to the president.
“We are thrilled that the President has accepted our invitation to deliver the keynote address at our commencement exercises this June,” said UCI Chancellor Michael V. Drake in a statement. “We are proud of the progress we have made during our first half century, and are looking forward to even greater achievements in the years to come.”
UC Irvine’s commencement will be held on June 14 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.
